Creamed Chipped Beef on Toast is a nostalgic comfort dish that has stood the test of time. With its creamy, savory gravy and tender pieces of dried beef, it makes a hearty breakfast, brunch, or quick dinner. Served over crisp, golden toast, this dish delivers old-fashioned flavor with minimal effort.

Ingredients

  • For the Creamed Beef
  • 4 oz dried chipped beef

  • ¼ cup unsalted butter

  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups whole milk

  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

  • For Serving
  • Toasted bread slices (as needed)

  • Fresh parsley, chopped (optional garnish)

Directions

  • Prep the Beef
Rinse the chipped beef under cold water to cut the saltiness. Pat dry and chop into bite-sized pieces
  • Cook the Beef & Butter
In a medium skillet or saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped beef and sauté for 1–2 minutes until lightly browned.
  • Make the Roux
Sprinkle the flour over the beef and butter. Stir constantly to form a smooth paste.
  • Add Milk
Slowly pour in the milk while whisking to avoid lumps. Continue stirring as the sauce thickens.
  • Season
Add black pepper and Worcestershire sauce. Adjust to taste if needed.
  • Toast the Bread
Toast your bread until golden and crisp
  • Assemble & Serve
Spoon the warm creamed beef generously over the toast. Garnish with parsley if desired

Notes

  • Extra Creamy: Add a splash of heavy cream at the end.
  • More Flavor: Mix in a pinch of garlic or onion powder.
  • Spice It Up: Add crushed red pepper flakes for heat.
  • Bread Options: Try it over biscuits, English muffins, or hash browns.

Storage & Reheating

Refrigeration:
Store leftover creamed beef in an airtight container for up to 3 days (without the toast).

Reheating:
Warm in a skillet over low heat, adding a splash of milk if it thickens too much.

Freezing:
Not recommended, as the dairy sauce may separate.

FAQs

1. Can I use a different type of beef?
Yes! Thinly sliced deli beef or corned beef can be used as alternatives.

2. Is the rinsing step necessary?
Rinsing helps reduce saltiness, especially with packaged chipped beef.

3. What type of milk works best?
Whole milk creates the richest sauce, but 2% or lactose-free milk also works.
